If you create an interest in blogging, the sky would be your starting point and not your limit.
So, what is a blog?
A blog, is a shared online journal where people can post daily experiences and hobbies. It gives you an opportunity to express your opinion on a chosen subject or a group of subjects where your interest lies. If you are a business fellow, starting a blog and updating the blog with information relevant to your product, would give your business a good reach on social media, which is referred to, in modern Information Technology (I.T) as ‘social media marketing’. So, want to start a blog, but you are confused on how to go about it? I present to you a step-by-step guide to starting a blog.
Decide on the subject(s) of your blog
Since, as a blogger, you would have to share ideas and information with your blog followers, the most important step in starting a blog is to know which subject or subject matters interest you the most. As, it would be very easy for you to write regularly on subjects you cherish.
Choose a good blogging platform
A blogging platform can be likened to a piece of land on which a building is constructed. Your blogging platform, is a virtual space (an online piece of land) where your blog and the files you put on the blog would be contained. Therefore, you have to conduct a thorough research about the various blogging platforms available and choose which best suits you. Blogging platforms include Word Press (A very common and user-friendly platform), Blogger (powered by google) and Tumblr. However, a downside to this free blogging platform is that, you would not have a domain name that is exclusively yours, the domain name would look like this:
However, if you do not such domain names, an alternative to using a free domain is to purchase a domain name. To purchase a domain name, you would pay a fee to a hosting company, such as ‘bluehost’. By purchasing a domain, your blog is yours completely and you would be free to upload as much information as you want, without the restrictions encountered when free blogging platforms are used.
It should be noted that WordPress as a blogging platform has some edge over other blogging platforms. This is because a WordPress blog:
- Is free and very easy to set-up
- Functions optimally and loads fast
- You would get a lot of support from other wordpress blog owners in case you have some difficulties
- Free themes are countless. This would make your blog stand out
- It is easy to make comments and share your content (a plus for marketing)
Work on the appearance of your blog
Whether you chose to host your blog on a free blogging platform or you purchased a domain name and hosted the blog on a hosting website, the appearance of your blog is crucial to attracting and sustaining the interest of your blog visitors. Browse through themes and select or purchase which of the themes best suit your blog. Then, you can rest your back, create Search Engine Optimized (SEO) content and watch your blog reach and bank account grow.
